Thursday Thoughts: How to Support Authors in a Competitive Publishing World

Stack of books on a chair with a pair of glasses

For today's Thursday Thoughts, I've been pondering how accessible the world of publishing has become to authors. With the rise of self-publishing platforms and independent presses, countless authors now have the opportunity to share their stories with the world. I've self-published books since around 2014 and then managed to become traditionally published for a while. Now that I've taken back my publishing power and became an independent author and publisher, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to market my books. Making a mark in the vast sea of published works can be incredibly challenging.

Although friends and family support my writing, I don't have nearly enough of those to help me make a dent in the Amazon Best Sellers Rank, especially as less than half of them have read any of my books, let alone bought one. It's all about how I reach readers and what they are prepared to do to spread the word about my books.

This Thursday I'm going all out to let readers know how they can support independent authors like me and help us thrive in a competitive publishing landscape.

1. Buy Their Books – Every Purchase Counts

It may seem obvious, but one of the most direct ways to support an author is by purchasing their books. Whether it's an eBook, paperback, or hardcover, each sale not only helps the author financially but also boosts their visibility. Sales rankings on platforms like Amazon or Barnes & Noble are influenced by the number of purchases, so buying a book can significantly increase an author's exposure.

For independent authors, every sale matters. Unlike traditionally published authors who might receive advances or extensive marketing support, indie authors often rely on each purchase to fund their next project or even to cover basic expenses.

2. Leave Reviews – Your Opinion Matters

If you've enjoyed a book, take a few minutes to leave a review on platforms like Amazon, Goodreads, or even social media. Reviews are crucial for authors, especially those who are independently published. Positive reviews help build credibility and encourage potential readers to give the book a chance.

But even constructive criticism can be valuable. Authors appreciate feedback that helps them grow, and potential readers often rely on reviews to make their purchasing decisions. Remember, your review doesn’t have to be lengthy – a few honest sentences can make a huge difference.

3. Share on Social Media – Spread the Word

Social media is a powerful tool for promoting authors and their work. If you come across a book you love, share it with your followers on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok. Tag the author and use relevant hashtags to increase visibility.

For authors with smaller followings, word-of-mouth is a vital marketing tool. Your post could introduce their book to someone who otherwise might not have discovered it. Social media algorithms also favour content with higher engagement, so every like, comment, and share helps amplify the author’s reach.

4. Subscribe to Their Mailing List – Stay Connected

Many authors have mailing lists where they share updates, exclusive content, and news about upcoming releases. By subscribing, you’re not only staying informed about their work, but you’re also showing your support in a meaningful way.

Mailing lists are a direct line of communication between authors and their readers, often bypassing social media algorithms that might limit the visibility of their posts. Plus, being on an author’s mailing list often comes with perks like sneak peeks, special discounts, or even free chapters!

5. Attend Their Events – Show Up and Show Support

Whether it’s a virtual book launch, a local reading, or a signing event, showing up to support an author can be incredibly impactful. For independent authors, these events are often crucial for building a community and connecting with readers.

Engaging with the author during these events – whether by asking questions, participating in discussions, or simply being present – can boost their morale and provide much-needed encouragement. Plus, it’s a great way to meet other readers who share your interests!

6. Engage with Their Content – Every Interaction Helps

Authors often share a wealth of content across various platforms, from blog posts and articles to podcasts and YouTube videos. Engaging with this content by liking, sharing, or leaving a comment can help increase the author's online presence and attract new readers.

These interactions are particularly important for independent authors who may not have access to the marketing budgets of larger publishing houses. Each like or comment contributes to building a stronger, more visible online platform.

7. Support Them Financially – Beyond Book Sales

If you’re passionate about supporting an author, consider contributing to their work through platforms like Patreon or Ko-fi. These platforms allow fans to provide financial support directly, often in exchange for exclusive content, early access to new projects, or other perks.

For many independent authors, this financial support can be a lifeline, enabling them to continue writing and producing content without the constraints of traditional publishing timelines or pressures.

8. Recommend Their Books – Word-of-Mouth is Powerful

One of the most powerful ways to support an author is through word-of-mouth recommendations. Tell your friends, family, book clubs, and colleagues about the books you’ve enjoyed. Personal recommendations often carry more weight than any advertisement or online review.

Consider gifting their books for birthdays, holidays, or special occasions. A personal recommendation paired with a gifted book can create a lasting impression and introduce the author to new audiences.

9. Be Patient and Understanding – Writing is Hard Work

Lastly, it's important to recognize the effort and dedication that goes into writing and publishing a book. Independent authors often juggle multiple responsibilities, from writing and editing to marketing and distribution. Patience and understanding from readers can go a long way.

If an author you love is taking time to release their next book, understand that quality work takes time. Offering words of encouragement during these periods can mean the world to an author struggling to balance the demands of their craft.

Conclusion: Your Support Makes a Difference

As a reader I'm sure you can appreciate what a competitive world independent authors face and the significant challenges that follow to make our mark. But with the support of dedicated readers like you, our work can reach new heights.

This Thursday, let’s commit to supporting the authors we love in any way we can. Whether through purchases, reviews, social media shares, or simply spreading the word, every action you take helps build a more vibrant and diverse literary world. After all, great stories deserve to be told – and with your help, they will be heard.

So next time you pick up a book from an independent author, remember that you’re not just reading a story – you’re helping to write their success.
