Since its publication, The Girl With The Louding Voice by Abi Daré has been on my radar, but I only recently had the chance to experience it—through the audiobook. And what an experience it was! From the moment I pressed play, I was utterly riveted, not just by the powerful and emotional journey of the protagonist, Adunni, but by the sheer brilliance of the narration.

A Story That Demands to Be Heard

This novel tells the story of Adunni, a 14-year-old Nigerian girl with an unbreakable spirit and a dream to obtain an education. The book’s themes of resilience, injustice, and hope are deeply moving, but what truly amplified the experience for me was the audiobook format. Hearing Adunni’s voice—complete with her unique phrasing and accent—brought a level of authenticity and emotional depth that I might not have felt as strongly had I read it in print. The narration made me feel as though I was right there with her, experiencing every triumph and heartbreak firsthand.

A Narration That Elevates the Story

A great audiobook relies on a compelling narrator, and the performance in The Girl With The Louding Voice was absolutely amazing. Adjoa Andoh, the actress who narrates the novel, delivers an impeccable performance, capturing Adunni’s youthful determination, pain, and joy just perfectly. Her ability to bring multiple characters to life, each with their own distinct voice, made the listening experience even more immersive.

As I prepare to record my own audiobook for my upcoming novel, Wherever You Will Go, listening to this production was both inspiring and eye-opening. It underscored just how much skill and nuance go into a top-tier audiobook narration. The pacing, the emotion, the clarity—it all matters, and I now fully appreciate the level of preparation I need to make my audiobook exceptional. No pressure, then!

The Power of Audiobooks

Listening to The Girl With The Louding Voice reminded me why audiobooks have become such a beloved format for readers worldwide and why I feel it's important to have my book available in the format.

  • They Bring Stories to Life – A great narrator can transform a novel into an unforgettable experience, making characters feel even more real and vivid.

  • They Fit into Busy Lifestyles – Whether commuting, exercising, or doing household tasks (for me it's making breakfast or doing the ironing), audiobooks allow you to enjoy a great story while multitasking.

  • They Enhance Emotional Impact – Hearing a character’s voice, especially in a book as deeply moving as this one, can heighten the emotional resonance of the story.

My Audiobook Journey Continues

Now that I’ve experienced the magic of The Girl With The Louding Voice in audiobook form, I’m officially hooked. I’ll definitely be buying more audiobooks in the future, not just for the enjoyment of a well-told story, but also as a learning tool as I embark on my own recording journey. If you haven’t yet explored audiobooks, I highly recommend starting with this one—it’s a masterclass in both storytelling and narration.
