A Journey with the Piano
For over 20 years, I’ve had a piano in my life, standing as both a really cool piece of furniture and a symbol of unfulfilled potential. It’s seen me through a Grade I exam (with distinction, I might add!) but also countless starts and stops on the road to playing fluently. Today, I’m making a public declaration to finally master this instrument and play with the confidence and skill I’ve always dreamed of.
A History of Starts and Stops
The story of my piano journey is one that many of you, I'm sure, can relate to: a burst of enthusiasm followed by waning commitment. I’ve dipped in and out of piano courses, watched YouTube tutorials, and even had a teacher for three weeks, but none of these efforts have carried me much further than the beginner stage. As a singing teacher, I use the piano for vocal warm-ups and exercises for my students, yet my skills remain basic - I'm talking one hand only. I’ve longed to accompany myself or play intricate pieces, but my fingers haven’t yet caught up with my aspirations. I have managed to play songs in the past and accompany myself, I won't lie, but once I've stopped playing consistently for a good period of time (and I'm talking months), I completely forget what I painstakingly learned.
Why This Commitment Feels Different
This time, it’s not just about learning for myself; it’s about accountability. By sharing this goal publicly, I’m adding a layer of motivation that I hope will keep me on track. I want to learn to play fluently and make music that inspires and uplifts. It’s a daunting goal, but I believe the act of stating it openly will push me to persevere.
The Power of Public Accountability
Have you ever openly committed to a goal as a way to hold yourself accountable? It can be a powerful motivator. By inviting others to join in your journey—even as silent cheerleaders—you’re less likely to let yourself down. The stakes feel higher, and the rewards, sweeter.
My Plan for Success
To keep myself on track, I’ve set some clear goals:
- Dedicate at least 45 minutes a day to piano practice, five days a week.
- Explore new techniques and songs to keep learning engaging.
- Share updates on my progress through this platform and my socials.
