From Page to Performance: My First Day Recording an Audiobook (and What I Learned!)

Introduction

I’ve always been passionate about storytelling, but stepping into the recording booth to narrate Wherever You Will Go was a completely new challenge. Day 1 of my audiobook journey was a mix of excitement, nerves, and valuable lessons. If you’ve ever thought about recording your own audiobook, I’ve got some insights to share!

A Nerve-Wracking Start

I won’t lie—I was nervous. Speaking your own words aloud, knowing they’ll be preserved in an audiobook, is a different experience from writing them on the page. Would my voice hold up? Would I stumble over my own sentences? It took a while to find my rhythm, but once I did, I began to enjoy the process.

Top Tips for Recording Your Own Audiobook

If you’re thinking about narrating your own book, here are some key takeaways from my first recording session:

  1. Prepare Your Voice – Hydration is key! I sipped water throughout. Actually rinsing the mouth around before swallowing keeps your mouth lubricated and less likely to get those clicky noises from your saliva.

  2. Pace Yourself – Reading too fast or too slow can impact the listener’s experience. I had to remind myself to breathe and find a natural rhythm.

  3. Read Your Script – Practice reading though your book ahead of time. I picked this up as a tip from professional narrators.

  4. Take Breaks – Recording is surprisingly tiring! Regular pauses kept my voice strong and my energy levels up. I had to control my mind and tell myself I could do this. And I was tired at the end. I can't lie.

  5. Embrace Mistakes – I tripped over words more times than I can count, but that’s what editing is for!

Looking Ahead

There’s still a long way to go before Wherever You Will Go is ready for audiobook listeners, but this experience has already deepened my connection to the story. I can’t wait to share more behind-the-scenes moments as I continue the process.
